Vision - Mission - Goals

DOT was established by an Act of Congress in 1966. Since then, DOT has worked hard to serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future.

DOT is comprised of 10 Operating Administrations (OAs), the Office of the Secretary, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the Office of Inspector General. Together, they develop national policy and programs which enable millions of Americans to safely travel from home to work, and to receive and deliver goods. In addition, DOT OAs conduct vital transportation-related research that ensures all modes of transportation are safe and effective.
